MEET THE TEAM: Diving Instructor Nessi – Hooked on the Underwater World
Nessi Hovi, a veteran at Raya Divers, has explored Thailand's best diving waters from several different locations. As an instructor, she especially enjoys sharing those "breakthrough" moments and creating lifelong memories for her guests.
Who are you and what is your role at Raya Divers?
I’m Nessi Hovi, and I work here as a diving instructor.
How did you end up here and which locations have you worked in?
My path to Raya happened somewhat by chance when I ended up sharing a table with Raya’s CEO, Jiri, through a mutual friend in Bali. The idea took off from there, and a few months later, I was already in Phuket, on the island of Raya Yai, completing my Divemaster course. Over the years, I’ve worked on Raya Yai, Phuket, Koh Lanta, several seasons in Khao Lak, and I’ve even done a brief stint in Krabi.
When and how did diving become part of your life?
It all started on a traditional holiday in Egypt back in 2005. I completed my Open Water Diver course there and fell in love with the sport immediately. I decided right then that it wouldn’t be just a one-time thing. However, several years passed before I continued my training in Komodo, Indonesia. After that, things picked up speed quickly, and I progressed all the way to becoming an instructor.
What is your favourite spot or trip where you’d take a friend first?
If the possibilities were limitless, the destination would be Raja Ampat in Indonesia. Among the Thai destinations, I would definitely choose Khao Lak. There is enough first-class diving there to last a long time.
What is your favourite Thai food and where is the best place to eat it?
There are many options, but as a vegetarian, my favorite is Fried Curry Tofu. It’s a great change of pace from the traditional Pad Thai. You can find the best Fried Curry at P’ann Restaurant in Khao Lak.
What is the best part of your job?
In one word: people. Whether it’s the customers, colleagues, or the local people I spend time with.
What kind of person truly thrives in this job?
This job suits someone who genuinely enjoys diving and the company of others. You need to be a team player but also enjoy working independently. You can't stress too much and you have to be able to adapt to situations. Thailand is Thailand, and things don't always go according to plan! Openness, cheerfulness, conscientiousness, and a certain kind of relaxed attitude are qualities that will definitely help you succeed here.
What keeps you coming back season after season?
It’s that famous, great Raya Divers atmosphere. Relaxed colleagues, pleasant customers, and of course, the stunning dive sites draw me back time and time again.
What has been the funniest moment of this past winter?
It’s hard to pick just one moment, but the best thing has been the general vibe of being back to teaching courses and taking customers on trips. In this job, we create happy memories for people. It’s wonderful to see the excitement of the customers after a successful dive or to watch how proud the students are when they've just passed their course. That energy is contagious and gives you a really good feeling.
What would you say to someone considering applying to work at Raya?
If you have the opportunity to head to the warmth of Thailand for the winter to provide people with experiences they’ll remember for the rest of their lives, then go for it, don't hesitate! However, be prepared for the fact that this job is addictive, and the urge to come back hits you easily.
