MEET THE TEAM: Terhi – 10 years with Raya and still loving life by the sea

Terhi is one of Raya Divers’ long-time team members and has now been with the company for 10 years. Over the years, she has worked in different destinations and taken on many different roles, but one thing has stayed the same: she helps make sure our guests’ days at sea run smoothly, safely, and with the right kind of relaxed Raya atmosphere. In Phuket, Terhi is one of those people who keeps everything moving behind the scenes, from customer service and practical arrangements to the day-to-day running of our dive operations.

Who are you and what’s your role at Raya Divers?
I’m Terhi, and I have a bit of an all-round role at Raya Divers. I do a little bit of everything, from customer service and practical arrangements to helping run the dive operation. My job is all about making sure our guests have the smoothest and safest day at sea possible.

How did you end up here, and where have you worked before?
I first came across someone from Raya while I was backpacking, and that’s when the idea started to grow on me. Now I’ve been with the company for 10 years. Over that time, I’ve worked in Phuket, Raya Yai, and Krabi, in a variety of different roles.

When did diving become part of your life?
Diving came into my life almost by accident on a holiday trip, but I was hooked straight away. After my very first dive, I knew I wanted to do more of it, and eventually it became my job too.

What’s your favourite destination or trip, and where would you take a friend first?
I’d take a friend to Raya Yai and not just on a day trip, but for an overnight stay. I spent three winters living on the island, so it will always have a special place in my heart.

What’s your favourite Thai dish, and where should people try it?
One of my favourites is chicken cashew with rice, and my favourite lunch spot is “Policebox” near the Chalong traffic circle. Pad kra pao is always a solid choice too, simple and full of flavour. Some of the best versions are found in small local street kitchens where the food is made quickly and with real heart.

What’s the best part of your job?
The people and the fact that no two days are the same. It’s always rewarding to see how excited our guests get, especially when someone experiences something for the first time.

What kind of person is a good fit for this job?
Someone who is flexible, takes initiative, and enjoys working with people. It helps if you can handle changing situations without stressing and still keep the good vibe going.

What keeps you here season after season?
It’s the combination of the team, the lifestyle, the sunshine, and the sea. Everyday life here is different from what it is in many other places, and it’s easy to get attached to it.

What’s been the funniest moment this winter?
There have been plenty. The funniest moments usually come from the people around you. A great team and easygoing guests mean there’s usually something to laugh about almost every day.

What would you say to someone thinking about applying for a job at Raya?
If you’re looking for new experiences and a different kind of everyday life, you should definitely go for it. It’s not always the easiest job, but it gives a lot back and at its best, the people around you make it an unforgettable experience.
